What is Acceptance Journeys Pittsburgh?

Acceptance Journeys Pittsburgh is a photo-story project.  In this project, volunteers from Pittsburgh share their stories of love and acceptance for their lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) friends and family.

What is the purpose of Acceptance Journeys Pittsburgh?

Stigma and discrimination have been implicated in negative health outcomes in many groups including people with disabilities, communities of color and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people. Acceptance Journeys Pittsburgh is a photo-story project that strives to address LGBT-related stigma in Pittsburgh. Through stories told by people in Pittsburgh about their love and support of an LGBT person, Acceptance Journeys Pittsburgh seeks to put words, faces and names to the process that each of us goes through in learning to love, accept and appreciate difference. Acceptance Journeys Pittsburgh strives to start a conversation with hope that these stories can help families and friends support each other in their own journeys.

Through these stories, Acceptance Journeys Pittsburgh seeks to put words, faces and names to the process that each of us goes through in learning to love, accept and appreciate difference. Who funds Acceptance Journeys Pittsburgh?

This project began in Milwaukee and we have been working to make it happen in Pittsburgh.  The funding for the original Acceptance Journeys project was provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Wisconsin Department of Health.  The Pittsburgh version is directed through the Graduate School of Public Health at the University of Pittsburgh.

Do you have a story of acceptance you would like to share?

We are looking for stories of acceptance from people who would like to be photographed and interviewed as part of our campaign.  These stories are about relationships: between parents and children, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, neighbors, pastors and congregants, and colleagues.  Photographs will include people sharing their stories as well as their LGBT loved ones, and may be used (with permission) for cards, posters, and website materials.  We are happy to talk to anyone who might be interested in sharing their story if they have any questions.
